I was speaking with a customer about getting a REAL ID New Jersey Driving License over the weekend. She didn't know that the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) had added on thousands more appointments starting late last month.
Things changed on March 20th when the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced that it was adding 4,500 more appointment slots. AND as of April 5th, they're sending out mobile units on Saturdays.
Just in case you don't know about this, it has to do with getting on an airplane. If you do not have a passport or some other Federally approved ID, you can no longer fly domestically without a REAL ID as of May 7th.
Your present driving license is still valid. It's just that you can't fly anywhere in the US without a REAL ID license. It will simply replace your current license.
You need to be prepared with all the necessary documents when you go to your NJMVC appointment. Everything is spelled out for you in detail on the REAL ID website.
Honestly, it is a bit of a pain in the neck to get it all together but it's not impossible. Start right away however. Trust me on this - waiting for the last minute won't work.
Why did this happen? The REAL ID law was actually passed in 2005 in response to the 911 Terror Attacks on New York City. The terrorists got on board the planes they flew with fake IDs. The Federal Government wanted this in an effort to make that impossible. Because this basically "fell under the radar" so to speak, States asked for extensions on the time they had to comply.
However, it's now or never if you want to fly in the US from May 7th on. Here's my advice on this too - bring a book or something to read. Even with an appointment, I bet you'll be waiting a while. Be patient and be kind to the overwhelmed staff at the NJMVC offices. They really are doing the best they can.
Can you get a REAL ID after May 7th? Of course you can. But there's a limit on that too so I'd get it done this year if you can. After all, you never know when you might want to fly so do it sooner than later.

You didnt make it clear that you dont need a Real ID if you use your passport. Its either.
