Have you noticed more police cars on the roads lately, especially near schools? Maybe more radar traps? There’s a reason — and we should thank our local police departments.
The school year is starting - Wednesday or Thursday is the first day of the school year depending on your town. That means more children are walking to and from school, waiting at bus stops, or heading to after-school activities. Many of them are young, excited, nervous — and not always careful about traffic.
That’s why speed limits are lower in school zones, and why enforcement ramps up this time of year. It’s not about writing tickets — it’s about keeping kids safe.
I’ll never forget something that happened over 30 years ago in Englewood. A teacher, heading home on Woodland Avenue, turned onto Booth Ave toward Engle Street. The fall sun hit her eyes just as a child darted across the street. She didn’t see the little girl in time and the child died That teacher was never the same. Every fall, I remember this.
As the days get shorter and the sun sets earlier, visibility gets worse. So please, no matter where you live: slow down. Be alert. Take that extra second to look.
Our kids are worth it.
