We're having a rough winter which caused me to skip last week.  It was not possible to tell you what would be cancelled last minute or unsafe in significantly below freezing temperartures.   

It doesn't seem like this weekend will be any different.  Actually right now, weather reports are that this weekend will be even colder.  Oh Joy!  So I'm going to concentrate on indoor activities.

Trivia Nights
If you've ever been to a trivia night at a local restaurant, you know how much fun it is.  Get a burger, have a Diet Coke or a beer and have fun out with trivia on a Thursday night. 

There are 2 restaurants that are trivia night fixtures in Bergen County.  I'm sure there are more but these 2 stand out - Orange Lantern in Paramus and Shannon Rose in Ramsey.  If you know of others, please tell me so I can feature them too.

Artists on the Cliffs at the Closter Nature Center
The Closter Nature Center is an educational lecture by Historian Francesca Costa on Thursday night at 7.  Francesca will tell you about the artists who created beautiful landscpes of the Palisades and were conservationists too.  Their love of the Palisades helped preserve thiem.  Artists on the Cliffs is a free lecture held at the nature center's cabin by the pond.  

Garden Club of Harrington Park
The Garden Club of Harrington Park is one of the most active garden clubs in Bergen County.  This Thursday night at 7:30 begins their 2026 lecture series.  The topic is "Container Vegetable Gardening" presented by Master Gardener Robyn Lowenthal.  This works for small spaces and/or to get a jump on outdoor planting in the spring.  Either way, it sounds like fun.  Free and open to the public too.  Robyn also runs a program for developmentally challenged adults - ask her about this during the Q&A session after her lecture.

Emil Buehler Trust Observatory Public Viewing Nights
See the night skies in a spectacular way every Friday night through February at the Emil Buehler Trust Observatory.  Public Viewing Nights happen 6:30-9:30 as long as the skies are clear at the Bergen Community College Technology Education Building.  This is free to the public;.

Cabaret Night: Duelig Pianos at the Wyckoff YMCA
This defines "back by popular demand" because it's a tremendously popular event.  Dueling Pianos at the Wyckoff Family YMCA is an audience request driven concert where people sing along to the rock and roll hits they request.  Getting tickets online saves you $5 a ticket too as long as you do it before Friday; this concert happend Friday night at 7 and there's a cash bar too. 

New Jersey Wind Symphony
The New Jersey Wind Symphony has a concert Friday night at 8 pm, Lift Every Voice, that celebrates "hope, heritage and new beginnings".  Featured musical guest the Gospel Connection Choir directed by Mack Brandon.  Included is a prelude concert at 7:30.  The 2 concerts are held at Ridgewood's West Side Presbyterian Church and tickets are online.   

The Drowsy Chaperone
I have seen this play at another venue a few years ago and I have to tell you it's a lot of fun and very funny.  The Drowsy Chaperone is on this weekend at HACPAC (Hackensack Performing Arts Center) with performances Friday at 2 and 7:30 and at 2 on Sunday.  This is like a play within a play so it's not only a fun musical, it's very interesting too.

Play On! at Bergen County Players
Here we have another musical comedy, Play On!, that's also lot of fun.  This is at Bergen County Players, one of our top live theater groups, and runs every weekend in February with performances at 8 Friday and Saturday nights plus 2 on Sundays.  The description sounds like old style madcap comedy.  It's about a mystery play about where the script, characters, etc are constantly changing which creates riotous chaos.  Tickets are online.

Blithe Spirit at Players Guild of Leonia
This is the last weekend for what has become a sell out play.  Blithe Spirit has performances from Thursday night through Sunday.  This Noel Coward masterpiece has had nothing but rave reviews.  One of my very good friends saw it when it opened and told me that it's fabulous.  Noel Coward is known for his sophisticated comedies and Blithe Spirit is one of his best.  Get your tickets online.  This is another truly wonderful theatrical production by The Players Guild of Leonia.

I'm not sure if outdoor activities will happen this weekend because the forecast is for weather that will be the coldest of the season; forecasts are for subzero temperatures with the wind.  So I'm not sure they'll still have the Super Sunday 5k and 2k Pup races in Franklin Lakes; I see a lot of cancellations being posted elsewhere.

There are things always happening at the American Dream Mall.  There's a celebration for Black History Month on Saturday, a 5k Run on Sunday and, of course, the wide variety of other activities from downhill skiing to Nickleodeon.  So check it all out on their website.
