I am late on this because I keep looking at the weather reports.  Rain begins today and continues all through the weekend ending on Wednesday of next week.  As a result, many events will be re-scheduled or outright canceled.

It's not my intention to be negative, but it really looks like several scheduled events will be canceled or compromised severely by the weather:

Memorial Day Weekend traditionally has the following:
A - Three major carnivals, all of which are important fundraisers: L.E.A.D., Holy Trinity Hackensack Parish Carnival and Madonna Church Carnival in Fort Lee. 
B - Swimming opens at The Lakes At Darlington County Park
There may be times when rain stops which will help with the carnivals but I doubt you'll be swimming in Darlington as the weather forecast I just heard this morning mentioned thunder and lightning.  Oh well.  
 
What about car shows?  They are always canceled when it rains.  We have 2 scheduled this weekend.  Englewood has a good one on Memorial Day - it's 10th Annual Classic Car Show and Parade plus the Mill Gardens Assisted Living Classic Car Show on Saturday with a rain date on Sunday.  Saturday and Sunday really look doubtful; we might get lucky in Englewood on Monday.

Friday night it's another Public Viewing Night at the Emil Buehler Trust Observatory.  However, they cancel when it's overcast because you can't see stars and planets with clouds and rain in the way.   Instructions are to email Sean McLearie at smclearie@bergen.edu so you get a notification if it's canceled.  I'd do that today.

Rain or shine, Teaneck's Cedar Lane Family Festival is still happening on Monday.  So let's hope the weather cooperates.  But either way, this big festival is happening.

No matter the weather, the bi-monthly Bergen County Audubon Society nature walks at the Teaneck Creek Conservancy go on.  They do ask that you register in advance for 2 reasons - so they know how many people to prepare for and in case they must cancel due to such things as thunderstorms.  Go to their Late May Walk website for all the information and to register.

This to me is so very important for children.  As a real estate agent, I often find myself teaching customers about economics, business, budgets, how to save money etc.  It is truly amazing to me at how little they've been taught.  It's not everyone but you'd be surprised at how many.  So if you have kids or know someone who does, know about this free program on Saturday - AABC's Annual Children's Business Fair

Fabricating For Faeries at the Tenafly Nature Center is such a great activity.  Children get to use natural materials (you have to bring your own base) to make their own faerie house.  They have 2 sessions -Saturday and Sunday - and while limited, there's still a lot of spaces left.  If it's raining, the kids will be under a cover.  As always, the Tenafly Nature Center is very reasonable - $5 for members and $10 for non-members.  Use the links for all the details and to register.

For adults indoors, check out the William Center in Rutherford.  The Center itself has musical events over the weekend and their Cinema Underground shows independent, avant garde movies almost every night.  Take a look because I'm sure you'll find something you'd like to see.  Plus Rutherford has some very cool restaurants which allows you to make a night of it.

Outdoor Bat Walk Sunday Night - We might get lucky here because the rain might not stop by Sunday night.  The Instagram link gives you all the details.  Bats are so very important and if you've ever had a mosquito bite, you'll love bats because they eat mosquitoes.  The location is not published to keep the bats safe from human harm.  Quite a sad commentary on us, isn't it?  At any rate, this is a lot of fun, very educational and not something you come across every day.

The Ridgewood Run is one of the most important USATF Certified runs in Bergen County.  A Memorial Day staple, it's not too late to register for Monday's run.  It's on rain or shine.  They have multiple distances and levels including a wheelchair run too.  Everything you need to know is on their link.

Memorial Day is a day off for a lot of us.  Traditionally, we see it as the start of summer.  It's a time when we get together with friends, family for barbecues and fun.  It is also a time to honor our armed forces today, those who served and those who didn't make it back home.  There are still town parades on Memorial Day Weekend, find out about yours.  Enjoy your weekend and when you see a vet or know one, thank them sincerely.  It is a fact that they stand in front of all us so that we can continue to live our lives.  And for those you know who have a son or daughter who didn't make it home, say a prayer for them.
